About Fairy Revel

I’m Charise, a Fantasy writer who has read too little fantasy literature and mythology, and who is scrambling to make up for lost time. I’m looking to broaden my experiences as a reader, and I hope you’ll follow along as I do.

Like me, this blog is a work-in-progress. I hope to feature book reviews, essays on fairy tales and medieval romances (in the traditional sense, not Romance novels), thoughts on writing and the writer’s life, recommendations, and links to writerly or fantastic places on the web. I’ll also post about what I’m working on, and the evolution of my creative process as I explore what it means to be a right-brained (intuitive) writer who doesn’t play well with outlines (or a lot of the other devices in the writer’s toolbox).

About ads and reviews:
This blog features the occasional review and does include ads and affiliations with stores like Amazon. Most of the books reviewed are books I own or get from the library, but I do get the occasional book free for review; I’ll always note it in the review when applicable. That said, I promise never to recommend something I haven’t liked or found useful, and to always be honest in my reviews. I do not give letter grades or stars or unicorn horns (except at sites like GoodReads that ask for them) because I think they are sort of arbitrary. View my Disclosure Policy.

What is a Desert Island Keeper?
I first heard about the “Desert Island Keeper” status at All About Romance; a “Desert Island Keeper” or “DIK” is a book that you’d want to have with you if your ship went down and you were stranded on a desert island. It’s a term usually used by Romance fans, but I’m using it for Fantasy because that’s what I read. I like this method much better than the assignment of letter grades or stars. See my Desert Island Keepers.
