Writers get paid to write. Blog posts are time spent and words written (and hopefully enjoyed), and bloggers and other writers need to eat and buy books just like everybody else. You can read all posts at Badgerish.Net for free, but there are a couple of ways I benefit from this weblog:

I’m affiliated with Amazon and HollyShop, and whenever you place an order with them via a link through my site, I get paid a percentage. This is a good way to support Badgerish.Net, because it doesn’t cost you any more, and you have a chance to donate.

I sometimes get free books to read. Almost all of the books at Badgerish.Net are my own, bought and paid for by me or a loved one, but every so often I will get a free book for review. When this is the case, I’ll mention this in the review.

I get to meet other people who love books, whether writers or readers. This is good fun, and one of the reasons I started this blog.

That said, I don’t feel like a free book or a few bucks is a good reason to throw away my integrity. I’ll never say I love something in a review unless I really do, and while I don’t believe in slamming my fellow writers, I’ll be truthful about a book’s flaws. I read to improve my writing, and I think analyzing a book’s shortcomings is just as helpful as reading a book that’s perfect—maybe more. So even if I do get paid in money or books, I will always be honest in my reviews.
